Our Story
Lost Coast Trails was born from a love story — between a woman, a wild stretch of California coastline, and a piece of land so beautiful it could only be called God's Country.
Abby Johnson first discovered the Lost Coast in 2017, and something in her simply knew. A mother of two with deep Texas roots and a decade of hospitality experience running a boutique hotel in Tulum, Mexico, Abby had spent years creating spaces where people could slow down and reconnect. But this rugged, breathtaking corner of Northern California called her home in a way nothing else had. In 2020, she made the move — and found herself on the banks of the gorgeous Mattole River, on a piece of land that felt like it had been waiting for her.
Abby's love of horses and her deep passion for animal welfare came with her. She had long been troubled by the suffering of abused and neglected horses, and by the heartbreaking reality facing mustangs removed from their wild lands. She knew she wanted to do something about it — to create not just a sanctuary for animals, but a place of genuine healing for all who arrived here, two-legged and four-legged alike.
As a certified yoga teacher and someone who has always believed in the power of nature to restore us, Abby envisioned something rare — a place where luxury and wilderness exist side by side, where guests can sleep under old-growth skies and wake up to the sound of the river, where the boundary between you and the natural world softens just enough to let something real come through.
Lost Coast Trails is that place. A sanctuary for horses. A refuge for the human spirit. A reminder that we are all — every one of us — deeply connected.
We are so glad you found us.
